10G/25G Tunable Modules: How To Achieve Flexible Wavelength Switching?

  • May 26. 2026

I. Core Principles of Wavelength Switching

Relying on tunable optical devices and intelligent network management for dual control, seamless wavelength switching can be achieved without replacing hardware or interrupting services, ensuring transmission rate and link stability throughout the entire process.

The core formula to remember first is c = f × λ. Since the speed of light c is constant, as the frequency f changes, the wavelength λ also changes.

How exactly do you adjust a tunable wavelength optical module?

There are generally two principles:

1. Adjusting the temperature (most commonly used)

(1).Laser chips contain thermoelectric coolers (TEC).

(2).Increased temperature → Increased refractive index of the chip → Increased wavelength

(3).Temperature decreases → Wavelength shortens

By precisely controlling the temperature, the target wavelength channel can be locked.

2. Adjust Current / Adjust Cavity Length

(1).Changing the driving current changes the refractive index of the active region.

(2).Some use tunable filters (such as MZI and Fabry-Perot cavities).

(3).Selecting a specific wavelength range allows for wavelength adjustment.

II. Core Hardware Support

The key to free wavelength switching lies in tunable optical modules, which are currently the most mature and user-friendly solution on the market. They directly replace older fixed colored optical modules, allowing for precise wavelength control from the signal transmitter. For 10G scenarios, SFP+ or SFP+ tunable DWDM modules are sufficient, while for 25G scenarios, the same tunable module as the SFP28 is recommended, providing full coverage of C-band standard wavelengths. The module features a built-in tunable laser, allowing for precise adjustment of current and temperature to lock onto the target wavelength. It is fully compatible with wideband detectors at the receiver, requiring no synchronous modifications, and can be remotely controlled with millisecond-level switching speeds.

III. Mainstream Switching Methods

Remote electronic switching is currently the preferred commercial solution, offering zero mechanical wear, high stability, and remote command switching based on chips and network management platforms. It supports on-site fine-tuning, remote batch scheduling, and fault switching, with a simple process and seamless business operation. When paired with WSS optical components, it can also adapt to high-end backbone multi-node transmission scenarios.

IV. Operation and Maintenance Pitfall Avoidance Guide

In practice, keeping these key points in mind will help you avoid making mistakes:

First, identify the ITU-T standard wavelengths and plan resources in advance to avoid channel crosstalk;

Secondly, avoid frequent wavelength switching to reduce laser wear; only activate high-speed mode during emergency repairs.

Third, pay attention to the optical power before and after switching, and perform equalization calibration to avoid signal attenuation and packet loss;

Fourth, ensure stable heat dissipation of the module to prevent wavelength drift caused by high temperature. During operation and maintenance, simply take precautions against static electricity.
